Club sex assault suspect released on bail

A 32-year-old married Brampton man charged with the drugging and sexual assault of a woman in a Toronto nightclub was released on $10,000 bail this morning.

Jagdeep Chahal is accused of slipping a drug into a woman's drink, then sexually assaulting her in the bathroom of a club near King St. W. and Brant St. on Jan. 22.

He "absolutely asserts his innocence," defence lawyer Sarah Williams said after his brief court appearance, and will plead not guilty to charges of sexual assault and administering a noxious substance.

"He's a little bit shaken up, but he's doing okay," she said. "He's got the support of his friends and family."

Chahal has no criminal record. He turned himself in Saturday, a day after police released surveillance footage showing him entering the club with another man. View that footage here - Chahal is the one with glasses.

His arrest was "a traumatic experience for a client who's not expecting to be charged with a crime," Williams said.

Under the terms of his release, Chahal is prohibited from entering Toronto's Entertainment District, consuming alcohol or frequenting bars.

Chahal may only leave home between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in the presence of his parents, who are his sureties, or his wife.
