A Scarborough sleep technician appeared in court Friday morning on the charge that he had sexually assaulted a 10-year-old patient.

Mohammed Shahid, 43, has been charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual exploitation after a young girl’s visit to the overnight sleep clinic near Birchmount Rd. and Lawrence Ave. E.

Toronto police said the girl’s mother had taken her to the Scarborough clinic at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31 because of the child’s sleeping disorder.

The girl later claimed that she had been sexually assaulted while she was with the technician, and police were called to the family’s home in the Weston Rd. and Eglinton Ave. W area.

The girl was awake during the assault, said police.

Shahid has been a sleep technician for many years and has also worked at another clinic in Toronto, said Const. Tony Vella of the Toronto police’s public information unit.

Shahid is not known to police, Vella added.

Police suspect there may be more victims and are hoping that Shahid will be detained prior to his trial.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-4100.
